About the project

Set in the 1990s, and partly inspired by real events throughout the 20th century, Darling is an upcoming short film about fame, betrayal, and finding hope in the midst of a crisis.

Story: Naomi is the daughter of an African king and a European princess, born with the eyes of the world upon her. As she enters adulthood and undertakes her first royal duties, she is soon dubbed “the nation’s darling” by the press, who follow her every move, along with the adoring public. But when a terrible threat comes from within her own security, Naomi learns that even with the whole world watching her, there are few people she can trust to have her best interests at heart.

Summary: In this short film, we follow Princess Naomi through the harrowing moments and immediate aftermath of an abduction attempt. 

Caught between the paparazzi and critics on one side, admiring fans on the other, and a web of bodyguards and surveillance all around her, Naomi finds herself at the centre of an absurd scandal, in which somehow she is the one who takes the flak.

Through all these trials, and despite her youth and vulnerability, Naomi shows resilience and resourcefulness, navigating the situation to get herself to safety. 

Finally, as the crisis continues to unfold, the princess unexpectedly meets a friend, with whom she is able to let her guard down and share some lighter moments, as the two seek a solution together.

Production type: Independent, facilitated by Breaking Jar Ltd

The successful candidate will be joining a full cast and crew of young artists and UK filmmakers, led by writer-director Hunter Boydell, to bring this meaningful story to life. All roles are unpaid. This is an entry-level opportunity to gain experience, develop your skills, and build your own portfolio and network, alongside your other work or studies. ‘Princess Naomi’ is the main protagonist of the film, so this actor will have top billing in the credits, and feature prominently in all publicity material. Independent release is planned for October 2025, followed by UK and worldwide festival entry from January 2026 onwards.

Open to all eligible candidates – no previous film credits required. Students, recent graduates, and young actors are encouraged to apply.
